Level One Training

Developing and managing projects

Course overview:

The training program on project development and management is a carefully planned and organized course that would enable participants to acquire skills and knowledge to be able to develop a project plan, including defining the project goals and objectives of the project, identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved, quantifying the resources needed, and determining budgets and timelines for accomplishing a successful project. The planning will also include specifying milestones or deliverables to be produced, and timelines for achieving the objectives and milestones along with employing regular ‘controls’ to ensure that there is accurate and objective information on ‘performance’ relative to the plan, and the mechanisms to implement recovery actions as when and where necessary.

Major topics to be covered in the course include:

  • The basics of Project Planning (what needs to be done, when, by whom, and to what standards).
  • Understanding the needs of stakeholders
  • Feasibility studies — Is the Project worth doing? Conducting baseline surveys, situational analysis, etc.
  • Determining project outcomes, goals and objectives?
  • Resource allocation; what do we need to implement project plans; (People, Money, Scheduling)?
  • Measuring Progress and Results? (Evaluating Implementation and project results?
Why? When do we monitor and evaluate?)
  • Report writing (communicating plans and status – progress reports)
  • Roles of different actors in project management
  • Skills needed to lead teams and people in project management
  • How to avoid pitfalls and what do we do if they occur?
  • Risk management: what could go wrong?
  • Ethical analysis: Are we in conformance- morally?

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand the five ‘W’s questions in project design and implementation; (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How)
  • Have a knowledge of cross-sectional coordination of projects
  • Design and establish high profile projects
  • Ensure a multi sectoral approach for project planning and implementation
